10 Smart (and Surprising) Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill This Summer

By Helen Adams Realty - June 18, 2025

As the temperatures rise, so does the strain on your home’s energy system—and your wallet. But cooling your home doesn’t have to cost a fortune. With a few smart strategies, you can keep your space comfortable while saving money and reducing your environmental impact.

Here are 10 practical, budget-friendly tips to help you cut your energy costs this summer:

1. Seal Up Sneaky Air Leaks
Your AC works hard to keep your home cool—don’t let that air escape! Use caulk or weatherstripping to seal cracks around windows and doors. Don’t forget less obvious spots like electrical outlets or attic access panels, which can also leak air.

2. Close the Blinds (and Upgrade Them If You Can)
Keeping blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day can block solar heat and keep your home cooler. For added impact, invest in thermal or blackout curtains, especially for windows that get direct afternoon sun.

3. Switch Ceiling Fan Direction
Make sure your ceiling fans are spinning counterclockwise throughout the summer. This creates a wind-chill effect that helps cool you down, letting you raise the thermostat by a few degrees without sacrificing comfort.

4. Try “No-Cook” Nights
Using the oven or stovetop can heat up your kitchen quickly. Plan for no-cook meals once or twice a week—think salads, wraps, or slow cooker recipes. Bonus: fewer dishes and less cleanup!

5. Upgrade to Smart Thermostats (and Actually Use the Features)
If you haven’t already, consider installing a smart thermostat. Many models now use learning technology and geofencing to optimize your home’s temperature based on your habits. And don’t forget to use the app—it’s the key to maximizing your savings!

6. Unplug Energy Vampires
Many electronics (TVs, gaming consoles, chargers) use energy even when they’re off. Use power strips to easily cut off power when devices aren’t in use—or upgrade to smart strips that turn off automatically.

7. Clean or Replace HVAC Filters More Often
Clogged filters make your AC work harder and less efficiently. During peak summer months, aim to replace your air filters every 30–45 days—especially if you have pets or allergies.

8. Shift Appliance Use to Off-Peak Hours
Many utility companies charge more for energy used during peak times. Try running your dishwasher or washing machine early in the morning or late at night when rates may be lower. Many appliances have a delay-start feature—use it to your advantage!

9. Zone Your Cooling
If you’re not using certain rooms during the day (like a guest room or upstairs office), close the vents and doors to direct cool air to the areas you use most. This helps your system run more efficiently and avoids cooling unused spaces.

10. Have a Mini Energy Audit
Even without a full professional energy audit, you can walk through your home and spot opportunities to save. Check for leaks, review thermostat settings, inspect weatherstripping, and take note of which lights or appliances get used most. Little tweaks can lead to big savings.

Cutting your energy bill doesn’t require a full home overhaul. In fact, it’s often the small, consistent habits that make the biggest difference. By being a little more strategic with how (and when) you use energy, you’ll enjoy a more comfortable home—and a less shocking utility bill.
