This year, our homes have become even more of a safe place, sanctuary, and retreat from the stress outside our front doors. To encompass this sense of safety, the leading paint and color company, Behr, has released their 2021 color trends forecast. The palette on their 2021 forecast includes colors for a calmer home and headspace, hopefully encouraging a positive mindset into the new year. Below are more details about Behr’s predictions and real-world examples at some of our firm’s recent listings.
Elevating Your Comfort Zone
The palette consists of 21 colors to elevate your comfort zone. According to the company’s website, the Behr Color Trends 2021 Palette is a curated selection of hues to create a desired mood that compliments your style in any space. The inviting set of colors offer a warm, grounding mood for people to incorporate into their future interior design trends, paint choices, and home furnishings. Behr’s inspiration for this palette came from our months at home during this year’s COVID-19-related policies.

For 2020’s color predictions, the brand focused on natural shades, from pastel browns to greens. Its color of the year was Back to Nature, inspired by outdoor elements such as the sky and plant life. But 2021’s choice leans more toward enhancing our comfort levels and becoming more at ease in our homes.
“We spend a lot of time there; our homes are working really hard,” says Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint Company. To promote “elevated comfort,” which is the theme for the 2021 paint color palette, the company is introducing a wide spectrum of shades, ranging from gentle neutrals to energizing bolds.

About the Shades
The 21 colors are grouped into six themes: Casual Comfort, which encompasses light, warm neutrals; Optimistic View, a collection of warm, engaging and brighter colors drawn from the Mediterranean and the 1970s; Subtle Focus, a group of soft pastels; Calm Zone, which includes restorative blues and greens; Quiet Haven, which encompasses darker traditional colors. Outdoor Escape is the same group of tones formulated for exterior use.
“More than ever before, our homes are our sanctuaries,” Woelfel says. “This has been a year of unpredictability, and 2020 has significantly changed our relationship with our home. Whether we are turning a playroom into a classroom or a guest bedroom into a home office, this palette was curated to help do-it-yourselfers and designers level-up their color discovery process, embrace the latest design trends and transform tired spaces into welcoming havens.”
Architectural Digest describes the palette as an ode to elevated comfort and the transformative and healing power of a home that has managed to wear many hats during the pandemic. Throughout this year, we have all been put to the test with our careers, health, families, and hobbies and there has been a renewed emphasis on our homes. This choice of colors is a hope for something lighter and more approachable next year.
